It is believed that Eliza Yeldham married Samuel Hodgson Smyth in Halstead, Essex in June 1833.

Diary entries kept intermittently from 1832 to 1840 when the writer may have immigrated to Australia. Depicts daily occurrences, social life and describes in detail her husbands movements. The first entry states '... plan to write down my thoughts down in a book; how I employ my time each day and whether I have prosecuted what I resolved to do. Also to write down any idea that strikes me, any thoughts, upon any circumstance that may have occurred in the course of the day to excite my interest or observation'.

A number of references are made to Australia throughout the text and on Tuesday, 11 February, 1940 the diary entry states that 'Mother and I went into town to buy goods for Australia ...".

In back of journal are five pages of notes titled 'History of the Jews'.

The diary was bought by a relative of the donor from Tyrrell's Bookshop, Sydney. It is believed that the writer immigrated to Australia
