Tony Maniaty, born 1949 in Brisbane, radio and television journalist, producer, writer and filmmaker. Maniaty began his journalism career with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He covered the conflict in East Timor in 1975, was Diplomatic Correspondent for Radio Australia, and in 1991-92 was the Paris-based European Correspondent for SBS's Dateline. His reporting of post-Soviet Eastern Europe included the documentary, Lithuania: Surviving the Revolution, nominated in Australia's Walkley Awards for Best International Report.
In 1993, Tony attended the Australian Film, Radio and Television School and wrote the short film Mr Ikegami's Flight and television drama for the ABC and SBS. In 1996, he was appointed Executive Producer of ABC's The 7.30 Report, and in 1998 was promoted to Senior Advisor, Policy and Program Development, for ABC News and Current Affairs. In 2000, he formed the communications and media training consultancy ManiatyMedia, and in 2003-2004 was Communications Manager at the Australia Council for the Arts.
Tony Maniaty has published two novels, The Children Must Dance (1984) and Smyrna (1989), which was short-listed for the Miles Franklin Award. He has written a memoir of his Brisbane boyhood, All Over The Shop (1993); edited The Power of Speech: 25 Years of the National Press Club (1989); and, from 1993-2008, contributed weekly book reviews to The Australian newspaper. He has written for Australian Gourmet Traveller and is the regular book reviewer for the Qantas in-flight program Up & Away. He has been awarded several Australia Council Fellowships, the Martin Bequest for Literature, the New South Wales Premier's Writers Award and the National Short Story of the Year Award. Shooting Balibo (2009) is his latest book.
In 2006, Maniaty obtained a Master of Arts (Media) degree for his research into television coverage of warfare from Vietnam to Iraq, and in 2007 he conducted the Risk Reporting course at the Danish School of Journalism in Arhus. As an Erasmus Mundus scholar, he taught the School's Foreign Policy Reporting course in 2008 and 2009. He is currently Senior Lecturer in International Journalism and Creative Practice at the University of Technology Sydney, and is completing his doctorate on the psychological impacts of frontline reporting. A former Director of the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, Maniaty is a member of the London-based International News Safety Institute, Sydney PEN, and the Australian Society of Authors.
In association with film director/producer Robert Connolly (ArenaMedia) and games developer Morgan Jaffit (Defiant Development), Tony Maniaty is creating Warco, an interactive game designed to train future television war correspondents. With funding from Screen Australia and Screen New South Wales, a prototype was completed in late 2011, and production is scheduled to begin in mid-2012.

Also included are videos of his film and television work. Includes also papers related to Maniaty's ABC reporting assignment in East Timor during the Indonesian invasion of 1975.

Box 1 includes a printout of the box list compiled by Maniaty for the 62 boxes received at acquisition. The collection was subsequently rehoused into 52 boxes. There is also a CD-ROM containing the box list for Collections 1 & 2; and a floppy disk and printout of the box list for Collection 1 compiled by Maniaty.
