    "Assyrian gem found at Nineveh
The Assyrian gem, now set in this gold ring [sic] was found by Surgeon Major Knapp (my uncle) of Her Majesty's 23 Regmt. [Regiment] Native Light Infantry, Bombay, at the time when Mr Layard was making his excavations at Nineveh.
The engraving on the gem when placed under a magnifying glass, will be seen to represent the 'sacred bull' of Nineveh, with the 'crescent' over its hind quarters.
Note also that the whole of the interior of the engraving is perfectly polished, showing th eantiquity and genuineness of the work.
The secret is not known to the modern lapidary.
    F.M. Knapp
    12th October '98 [1898]"
