Jean Daly (1897-1986), Catholic laywoman and women’s rights activist, was born at Strathfield, NSW, the eldest of six children of Walter Edmunds, and his wife, Monica, nee McGrath. She graduated from the University of Sydney (BA, 1918). In 1921 she married medical practitioner and specialist anaesthetist, Harry John Daly, before completing a law course. She co-founded in 1946, and was first President of, the NSW Section of St Joan’s International Alliance, an unofficial organisation of Catholic women established to promote their participation in public life. She wrote a column for The Catholic Weekly in the late 1950s on a range of issues and had been opposed to B. A. Santamaria and the Catholic Social Studies Movement. She was an abiding advocate for social justice for women and represented Australia at Sessions of the Status of Women Commission at the United Nations in 1951, 1955 and 1957.
