Thomas Stuart Gurr (1877-1960) was born in India and migrated to Sydney in 1916. He wrote for stage and radio, worked as a journalist, and served as general manager of the Sydney Sunday Times. For the 20 years prior to his death, he held the position of Secretary of the Audit Bureau of Circulations. He was the author of several stage and radio plays, his most successful theatrical collaboration was with Varney Monk on the musical 'Collits Inn' (1932).

Joseph Wolinski (1872-1955) was born in Germany and arrived in Australia in 1883. He was a painter and art teacher after he studied at the Royal Art Society School, Sydney around 1889. He entered 107 entries in the Archibald Prize and is remembered for the part he played in the legal action against William Dobell's win in 1943.
