  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Corporal Percival Turvey (no. 2693) was born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales on 23 March 1892.
    He was employed at the Kandos Cement company (Rylstone, N.S.W.) when he enlisted at age 23 and embarked from Sydney, N.S.W. on the HMAT Runic A54, on the 9th August 1915. He served in the 3rd Battalion, Australian Imperial Force was awarded medals (Distinguished Conduct Medal, Military Medal) for bravery during an attack at Mont de Merris near Strazeele, France on the 14th April 1918. He was discharged in April 1919.
    During World War II he enlisted at Rylstone N.S.W. on the 13th December 1941 and served as a Private in the Australian Army and later discharged, 18 March 1942. After his return from World War I, Percival Turvey was sold a block of land by his sister-in-law Helene Turvey which he later cultivated and ran as a successful strawberry farm (Belrose, N.S.W) with his wife Esther Verley Turvey. He died at Wamberal, New South Wales on 16 May 1965.

    In 1907, George Turvey while working at a dispensary (chemist) made payments on virgin bushland at French's Forest which was later to become Belrose Village, N.S.W. His investments included a pharmacy in Cressy St., Denilequin in 1910; Lesters Pharmacy, Mudgee, N.S.W. in 1917; a chemist in Dunedoo in 1916. He died on the 20th February 1920, age 46 as a result of the flu epidemic. He was survived by his wife Helene Turvey and three remaining children, Clarice Ruby Turvey, George Turvey and Helene Bertha Turvey. The eldest child Gwendoline May Turvey died 6 months before her father George.
