  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Archibald B. Pursell, born in 1865, emigrated to Australia from England in 1885 and the following year established the insurance brokerage A .B. Pursell & Sons Pty Ltd. The company's clients included David Jones Pty. Ltd and Anthony Horderns, for whom the firm handled a fire in 1901 which burnt down Hordern's Haymarket premises.

    Pursell managed A .B. Pursell & Sons Pty Ltd. until his retirement in 1946. The company went on to operate until 1974 when it was acquired by Manor Holdings Limited.

    Pursell was also actively involved with Sydney YMCA of which he was president, the temperance movement of the Methodist Church and Rotary Club.
