    Theophile Elongo was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1974, the youngest of ten children of a teacher and an assistant nurse. After completing university, he worked for the Red Cross as a community health liaison officer. He and his family fled to Tanzania in 1996, spending four years in refugee camps. He arrived in Australia in 2004 and is now director of the Great Lakes Agency for Peace and Development (GLADP), which works with Congolese, Rwandan, Burundian and Ugandan communities in New South Wales.
