    Terry Callander was a member of the Victorian Branch of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) from its inception in the 1950s and also a longtime full-time DLP official.

    Mark Aarons is an author and former ABC Radio National broadcaster and political advisor. He has written six books and published feature and opinion articles in many of Australia’s major newspapers and magazines. He has won various awards for his work, including the 1990 Human Rights Award for Prose.

    For two decades beginning in the early 1970s Aarons worked at Radio National, first on the original Lateline program and then on Broadband. He was the founding Executive Producer of the network’s investigative documentary program Background Briefing. He was also an official of the ABC Staff Union and active in many campaigns in defence of the independence of the national broadcaster.

    During his years at the ABC Aarons undertook a series of major investigations and collated large collections of files, some of which are deposited in this collection, of documents covering East Timor, the National Civic Council and papers associated with the books he has authored.

    Aarons has written widely on war crimes, East Timor (which he first visited in 1975 on assignment for the ABC), the Catholic Church and the Middle East, including best-selling books The Secret War Against The Jews, Ratlines and War Criminals Welcome.
  • Scope and Content
    Series 03 contains papers relating to the National Civic Council, its influences and activities in trade unions and its operation of front organisations. The files were collected in the period 1977-1992 in a series of investigations for the ABC. They cover material originally held by former senior members of the NCC, the unions it controlled and includes documents from a number of NCC-controlled or influenced front organisations.

    BOXES 24-25 contain the files of Terry Callander which contain comprehensive material on the DLP’s history from 1958 to 1973.
