Campbell Mitchell (1831-1883), son of Sir Thomas Mitchell, was gazetted ensign in the 75th Regiment on 3 April 1849. The regiment left England for Bengal on 7 May 1849. In 1852 he was made lieutenant, but was cashiered after being found guilty by court martial of cheating at billiards. He managed his father's affairs in London, including trials of the boomerang propeller, after Sir Thomas's return to Sydney from a visit to promote his invention to the Admiralty in 1853-54. Campbell inherited Sir Thomas Mitchell's estate at Stanwell Park and owned it from 1855 to 1872. Campbell Mitchell never married. He died on 1 April 1883. Sources: Foster, W.
