• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  Donald Friend, artist and author, was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1915. In 1947, following his active service, Donald Friend with Donald Murray purchased a small wattle and daub miner's cottage in Hill End, N.S.W. Black and white, pen and ink sketches constitute the main body of his output at Hill End.
  
  Beyers Cottage was built by the pioneering Polish miner and Hill End mayor, Louis Beyers in the 1850s. Next door was the Australian Joint Stock Bank built in 1856. St Paul’s Presbyterian Church was commenced and completed in 1872 at a cost of 1500 pounds.

• Scope and Content
  A drawing of ink and wash on paper, shows Hill End, N.S.W. in the year of Friend's arrival, 1947. The buildings are the St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Tambaroora St (on right), Beyer's cottage and the old bank (probably the Australian Joint Stock Bank) on Clarke Street.
  
  On the reverse side of the drawing are sketches of a horse, a dog, and three men, two carrying a swag.
