  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    A bound artist's sketchbook belonging to Private Val Marshall, 4th Battalion A.I.F., a scout master and accomplished amateur artist from the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Marshall is know for his sketches of Gallipoli, where he was also wounded three days into the campaign in April 1915. This album was begun ca. 1916 during Marshall's convalescence in England, and includes works by various other talented, convalescing soldiers and other works posted from Australia.

  • Scope and Content
    Sketchbook with inscribed monogram V.F.M. containing 48 leaves. Includes 18 watercolours, 1 painted photograph, 2 pencil drawings, 3 ink drawings and 2 handwritten sheets. The majority of paintings have been tipped in and are by various Australian amateur and professional artists including Augustus Aley, Cyril Samuels, Fred Knowles, Cecil Hartt, Marie Beedham, Alan Beedham, D. Beedham, H. Woolaston, Carl Moore ( "C. Gordon"), Hal Chester, G. Galway, and Val Marshall himself. Subjects include landscapes, including Old Spit Road, Bondi and The Heads; portraits, humorous military cartoons and a full page manuscript poem written in ink in a calligraphic hand and titled 'The Glutton', signed and dated by Kenneth Slessor May 10, 1920.
