Bertie McAdam Lowing was born 29 October 1881 at Parkes, New South Wales to a farming family. He enlisted for the South Africa War (Boer War), (1899-1902) in the New South Wales Imperial Bushmen Unit and served for 15 months. He also enlisted for the First World War in October 1914 and was placed in the Australian Light Horse as a Sergeant. He landed at Gallipoli in August 1915 and was there amongst the last to leave in December 1916. Promoted to Lieutenant he was sent to the Middle East where he was involved in the battles of Gaza and Sheria. He was promoted to Captain and was involved with the Charge at Beersheba in 1917 and the taking and marching into Damascus. He was awarded the Military Cross with 1 Bar and ended the war as a Major.
