  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Mary King (1805-1872) was the daughter of Philip Gidley King who was the third governor of New South Wales. Mary married her brother-in-law Robert Copeland Lethbridge in 1826 in England. They migrated to New South Wales in 1827 and had seven children. They resided at Werrington, a property which had been assigned to Mary when her father left office in 1806. Robert and Mary built their home there, called Werrington House. Mary died 17 December 1872 at the age of 67 at the residence of her daughter Mary Copeland Cowper in Sydney.

    A hand coloured ambrotype of a painted portrait of Mary King, ca 1850.
    The ambrotype is in a gilt mount frame with glass overlay, inside velvet-lined gold tooled leather and wooden case, with two metal clasps.
