Ian Clarke (1924-2012) was the eldest of four children of Donald (Don) and Bernice (Bernie) Clarke. Don, a Methodist minister, served in both the Army and Air Force during World War II while Bernie worked as house manager of hospitals and hostels in Australia and Noumea. Ian enlisted in April 1942, serving first in the 30th Australian Infantry Training Battalion. He transferred to the 2/5 Australian Infantry Battalion and in December 1944 sailed from Cairns to Aitape on the north coast of New Guinea, where he remained until his demobilisation in March 1946.
