    Donald Friend (1915-1989), Australian artist and writer, wrote and illustrated 'Coogan's Gully', which was published by Gryphon Books in 1979.

  • Scope and Content
    VOLUME 1
    Handmade folio size volume produced by Donald Friend's publisher Richard Griffin containing Friend’s complete original manuscript copy laid down alongside proof illustrations.
    Inscription on verso: ‘A greatly abridged version edited by Richard Griffin was published by Gryphon Books pty. Ltd. 1979. This paste up using the authors holograph manuscript and proof pages from the published book was compiled by Richard Griffin’.
    Final two pages contain cutting ‘Donald Friend, down from Bali’ from The Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday 31 March 1979; invitation to book launch and exhibition of illustrations for 'Coogan’s Gully' at Holdsworth Galleries, Woollahra, 13-22 November 1979; holograph note from Friend: ‘According to the author ‘Coogan’s Gully’ is not a children’s book, unless the term ‘child’ is applicable to literate & sophisticated geriatrics who have entered a vigorous second childhood’.

    Inscription on half title page: ‘For my favourite person (DF). Authors copy. The curse of Tutankhamen on the thieving creature who dares take this volume away, lousy as it is. Donald Friend. 15th Nov 79.’
    Inscription on verso: ‘The words “Designed by Richard Griffin” are concealed beneath this [copyright sticker] which was pasted in by Richard himself to conceal the fact. Actually some of the errors in layout were made by Globe Press, the Printers. Richard was responsible for the “editing” (butchering out 75% of the original text etc) also for the unattractive shape of the book & other alterations made without my knowledge’.
