The early governors of NSW were empowered to grant land to emancipists who were ‘of good conduct and disposition to industry.’ John Laurie was sentenced to transportation for seven years in 1804. He arrived in Sydney in 1806 on the Fortune. He was freed after serving his sentence and became a successful business man. - Collection historyDonor purchased the item from the auction house of Mr John Williams
- Scope and ContentLand Grant issued to John Laurie relating to 90 rods of land in George Street, Sydney. Signed by Lachlan Macquarie, witnessed by Henry Colden Antill (Macquarie’s aide-de-camp) & Joseph Cowgill, and registered in 1817 by John Campbell (Macquarie’s secretary).
