Variously titled ‘Birds of Australia’ and ‘Bird biographies’ during production, Neville William Cayley’s national field guide to birds was ultimately published in 1931 as ‘What bird is that?: a guide to the birds of Australia’. Cayley was credited as both author and illustrator of the book, while photographs and field observations were contributed by many ornithologists and photographers, including A. J. Campbell, who wrote notes on nests and eggs. Charles L. Barrett was the general editor for the work.

This subseries includes manuscripts, correspondence and other papers relating to production of the book.
