  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Reverend Dr John McGarvie (1795-1853) was a Presbyterian minister who came to Sydney in 1826 from Glasgow in Scotland. He was personally selected by Rev. John Dunmore Lang as the first minister of the Ebenezer Church at Portland Head on the Hawkesbury, where he remained until 1830. He became a prolific writer, especially after his brother William co-founded the 'Sydney Herald' in 1831. Invited to start a second Presbyterian congregation he built the Scots Church in Kent Street near Bathurst Street in Sydney. The church opened for divine service in 1835, with McGarvie as its minister.
