  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The area of east Darling Harbour (now known as Barangaroo) has been a hub of shipping activity and docks since the mid 19th century. In the early 1900s, the wharves were extended and further storage facilities built to accommodate larger, cargo ships. However, by the end of the 20th century, changes in shipping and the lack of access to freight rail lines, ultimately led to the closure of the area as a working facility. In 2003 the State Government announced that the stevedoring wharves at East Darling Harbour would be transformed into a new urban residential precinct, known as Barangaroo.
Not a lot is known of the artist W. J Thomas. He worked in watercolour, and painted Sydney Harbour and NSW scenes during the period 1885-1911. His work is held by AGNSW and SLNSW.
  • Scope and Content
1 watercolour depicting Pyrmont in 1907. The watercolour uses a mixture of whites, blues and blacks, presenting an image of an industrial area where there is smoke rising from both the boats on the water and from factories on land; the sky can not be seen and only objects in close proximity, such as "Dalge Bon Wool Store" can be seen clearly.
