  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    James Edward Raymond (1852-1931) was born in Sydney and was the oldest son of Samuel and Catherine Raymond. His grandfather, James Raymond (1786-1851), arrived in Sydney in 1826 and served as postmaster general. James E. Raymond married Martha Jane Croker in 1879 and they moved to Greenwich in 1905. James and Martha had eight children including Kathleen (Daidee) Raymond who married Eric Payten Dark in 1918 and died shortly after giving birth to their only son John Oliver Dark. The Australian author Eleanor Dark (1901-1985) was Eric’s second wife.

  • Scope and Content
    Collection in one box, numbered by John Oliver Dark. Numbers 9, 10 and 12 were not received and are not in the collection.

    1. 1 yellow box containing carte-de-visit images of the Raymond family. Images have been taken from various photographers. The photographers' details are printed on the verso, with a hand-written inscription regarding the people in the image often written over the top. Further black and white photographs of the Raymond family are also in the box.

    2. 3 photos of Dr Eric Dark's family after the death of his wife Daidee nee Raymond - a year after his marriage to Eleanor.

    3. Album of Raymond's at 1905 and HMS Morea/Eric photo. ('Grannie' refers to Catherine Sophia Raymond nee Bull). Portraits contain hand-written descriptions below naming the people in the image.

    4. 1900 exercise book compiled by Vixie Raymond - her drawings and prose - photos at back of book. Many images of well-known Sydney locations such as The Gap and Watsons Bay, which are labelled beside each image.

    5. Carte-de-visite photos of the Croker family (Martha Raymond nee Croker). Includes Marta Raymond's father, mother and sisters. The photographer's details are printed on the verso, and details of the image are hand-written over the top on the verso. Includes an image of Martha's nephew who died in France in 1918, printed on postcard , with "Postcard" printed and his details handwritten on the verso.

    6. Vixie in the library she ran in North Sydney and other photos of Eileen, Ivy and Vix in later years.

    7. Photographs of the Blacket family and children - Phyliss Raymond married Ralph Blacket - a descendent of the architect Edmund Blacket, Ralph and Eric Dark (who married Daidee Raymond) were old friends - he is seen in the photograph of Phyliss holding a rifle that Eric gave her for a wedding present.

    8. Carte-de-viste of Aunt Hal who was the daughter of Colonel J.E.N. Bull and Mary Gunn as well as James Raymond's aunt. There are also images of James' sister, Maimee, and her husband Leslie Farlie.

    11. Photos of stages of the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge as well as images of Customs House.

    13. Eleanor Dark's copy of 'The Flamp' which she read to her stepson John Dark - grandson of James Raymond.

    14. First World War postcards - unused with black and white war photographs on the front.

    15. 1 green box containing 175 postcards sent to Miss Raymond. Verso contains a hand-written correspondence. Fronts contain various images which usually have an inscription describing the contents of the image. A variety of black and white and coloured images are used. 3 additional postcards appear at the end of the sequence and have no correspondence. Postcards were quoted in "The Raymond's of Greenwich".

    16. 1 white folder containing various blank postcards of the same period - early 1900s. Postcards depict coloured images of Sydney CBD. A booklet of black and white photographs depicting areas in the Blue Mountains, such as Leura and Blackheath.

    17. Unfinished memoir of John Dark, notes about family tree and copies of two letters from Erick Dark to John Dark.

    18. Invitation to royal reception for the inaugural Commonwealth celebrations addressed to James Raymond.
