‘Girt by Sea’ was a 2006 project by Ruth Maddison to document the fishing industry in the small, south coast town of Eden, NSW. The project comprised 3 parts: Maddison firstly photographed and interviewed the local fisherman, and then scanned the fishermen’s own personal photographs. She was fascinated that the fisherman had kept photographs of their own work, regularly taking a camera with them onboard fishing boats, etc. The images depict a range of local fishing activities, and many have accompanying personal inscriptions.
