  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Farmers' and Settlers' Association of NSW was established in 1893 to support and represent NSW farmers and settlers and in political, industrial and commercial matters, advise on best practice and disseminate current information about the agricultural industry and markets.

    James McInerney was a member of the Farmers and Settlers Association from 1899, serving as vice-president from 1899 to 1902 and as president from 1902 to 1905. In 1906 he resigned from the Association to join the Australian Labor Party. From 1906 to 1911 he was President of Adjungbilly Shire. In 1912 McInerney was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council, but he died at Gundagai before taking his seat.

    The first portrait is of 16 men in 2 rows. James McInerney is sitting 3rd from left in the front row. The portrait is mounted with stickers containing the name of G.A. Hills in the bottom left corner and 9 Castlereagh Street, Sydney in the bottom right corner.

    The Corowa Free Press, Friday 25 August 1905, p. 6 has identified this image as the New Executive of the Association that was photographed at the 1905 Annual Conference.

    The second portrait is a large group of approximately 80 men standing outside the Chamber of Commerce and the Royal Exchange building. The 1910 conference was held at the Royal Exchange building. The photographer is Wilhelm Kimbel & Co. Alex. Weir. Manager. Bottom right corner has 76A Pitt Street, Sydney.
