  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Solomon Levey (1794-1833) arrived in Sydney as a convict in 1815, following his conviction as an accessory to theft. He began in business almost immediately, and after his pardon in 1819, became one of the most successful early Jewish settlers in the colony. With his business partner Daniel Cooper he bought up large tracts of land in Sydney. His later, ultimately unsuccessful, venture with Thomas Peel to establish colonists at Swan River necessitated the sale of much of this land to raise capital.

Peter Louis Bemi (1795-1853) was a surveyor and draughtsman, working for the Surveyor General of New South Wales.

  • Scope and Content
Manuscript, ink on paper, 4 pages, including a plan signed and dated by P.L. Bemi, being an indenture for the sale of a parcel of land between Elizabeth and Castlereagh Streets, facing Hyde Park, Sydney, by Solomon Levey to Jacob Wyer, dated 7 January 1831.

Parties to the contract are described as being ‘Solomon Levey of George Street Sydney in the Colony of New South Wales at present of Tokenhouse Yard in the City of London, merchant’ and ‘Jacob Wyer of Sydney in the Colony of New South Wales, ropemaker’.

The ink and watercolour plan shows the dimensions of the property, its position between Elizabeth and Castlereagh Streets to the east and west, the premises of Mr Holmes and Mr Miller to the north and south, and the location of cottages, stores and workshops, a well and yards on the property.
