  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Frank Debenham (1883-1965) was born in Bowral, New South Wales, and studied geology under Sir Edgeworth David at the University of Sydney. In 1910, Captain Robert Falcon Scott selected Debenham and fellow Australian T. Griffith Taylor as additional geologists on the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1913, which sailed to Antarctica in the ‘Terra Nova’. Debenham made two scientific journeys in the first and second summers to the mountains west of the expedition base at Cape Evans but did not take part in the ill-fated attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole, which claimed the lives of Scott and his four companions on the return journey. Herbert G. Ponting was the official photographer for the expedition but after his departure in February 1912, Debenham took over his role.
