    Hugh Dixson is the great-grandson of the same name emigrated in the 1800's. He is also the nephew of one of the State Library’s greatest benefactors, Sir William Dixson who donated pictures for the Dixson Gallery and bequeathed his collection of books and manuscripts to form the Dixson Library.

    John Murphy is an independent curator based in Sydney with a sound knowledge of Australian cultural history and extensive experience in the curatorship of exhibitions and the management of pictorial and manuscript collections. He was previously a senior curator at the Mitchell Library.

  • Scope and Content
    Hugh Dixson shares some of his childhood memories of growing up on a farm in Castle Hill, and, the way, as a child, he remembers Sir William Dixson. Hugh Dixson recounts the events following Sir William Dixson's death, with a focus on the management of the collection and the transfer of material to the Public Library (the State Library of New South Wales). Hugh explains the use of technology in the house, including the internal telephone system, and the water tank. Hugh discusses his involvement with the Children's Hospital, followed by the impact of and experiences during World War II. Hugh discusses his years at university and the effect this had on building his relationship with Sir William Dixson. Following this, he explores his working life and some of the companies and associations he was involved with.
