These illustrations are typical of any natural history artist who uses preliminary drawings, sketchbooks and notations as a part of their creative process and helps to record, organise and clarify ideas and perceptions of daily events, objects and fieldwork; and also from imagination and memory. Many of the pages contain notations, record the time of day, location and have traces of colour.

The drawings had been arranged into folders titled with their subject. Inside the folders the drawings were further divided into folders of narrower subjects. For example, the folder titled 'Pigeons and doves' contained several folders titled, 'Diamond dove', 'Emerald dove', 'Wonga pigeon', etc. These folder titles became the basis of the record title. Large folders due to their size were discarded and smaller folders were kept with the collection.
