  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Dr Lionel Arthur Gilbert (1924-2015) was an Armidale author, historian and naturalist. Dr Gilbert wrote many books, including The Last Word: Two Centuries of Australian Epitaphs (2005) and History Around Us (1974).

David Scott Mitchell (1836-1907), academic and book collector, was the only son of Dr James Mitchell, a physician, and Augusta Maria Frederick Scott, a member of a well-connected family with properties in the Hunter River region.

His younger sister Margaret Scott Mitchell (d. 1886) married William Bell Quigley in 1870, Dr James Mitchell's former coachman. William Quigley was accidentally killed on Tuesday 19th March, 1879 and was buried on his property at Lake Macquarie. Margaret Quigley was killed in the 1886 fire that destroyed her Booragul home.

David Scott Mitchell died of pernicious anaemia on 24 July 1907, and was buried in the Church of England section at Rookwood Cemetery. In 1987, David Scott Mitchell’s tombstone at Rookwood was restored by stonemason Con Sondermeyer.
