  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin was born at Talbingo, New South Wales, in 1879, the daughter of John Maurice Franklin and Margaret Susannah Helena Franklin, née Lampe. Her brother Hume Talmage was born in 1889, after the family's move to Goulburn. In 1901 she published her best-known book 'My Brilliant Career'. In 1906 she went to Chicago, where she worked for the National women's Trade Union League of America, principally as co-editor of 'Life and Labor'. In 1915 she arrived in England where she would remain, except for two short visits to Australia, until late 1932. She joined the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service in 1917 and served in Serbia until February 1918. From 1919 to 1927 she worked as secretary with the National Housing and Town Planning Association in London. She returned to Australia permanently in November 1932 and lived for the rest of her life in the family home in Carlton, Sydney.
