  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Watson and his son were both prominent in the trade between England and New South Wales. They appear to have had an interest in the ship ‘Rose’ which was also part-owned by the Sydney firm Campbell & Co. The ‘Rose’ arrived in Sydney on 15 April 1808, only a few months after William Bligh had been deposed as governor, and was caught up in the aftermath of the ‘Rum Rebellion’. Lieutenant-Governor Foveaux seized the ship as an illicit trader, due to the absence of a clearance or licence for importing spirituous liquors, and its unauthorised unloading of spirits in Hobart prior to its arrival in Sydney.
