  • Scope and Content
The 26 colour drawings depict the events of a story about an Australian soldier named Albert in the Somme, France during World War I.

The drawings demonstrate the illustrator’s working process as each sheet contains watercolour colour tests and charts, and some sheets contain working notes in pencil.

The children's book titled, 'A Soldier a Dog and a Boy' was inspired by a photograph seen by the author Libby Hathorn on a visit to the State Library of New South Wales. The image is of a French orphan Henri Tovell, being found in a sack, by Australian solder Timothy Tovell, who smuggled Henri back to Australia and then adopted him. 'A Soldier, A Dog and A Boy' presents a fictionalised version of the story of Henri Tovell and his adoptive father.
