  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Hector Fred Lord was 21 when he enlisted in the Australian Flying Corp with his twin brother, William Henry Lord. They embarked together in April 1915 both holding the rank of Air Mechanic. Sadly, William was killed as a prisoner of war in July 1916. Hector remained with his unit in the Middle East until April 1919. When he returned to Australia he moved to New South Wales, where he died in 1950.

  • Scope and Content
    96 photographs in 2 albums, taken in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine and other areas of the World War I Middle East Campaign. The photographs depict scenes of Air Force personnel, aircraft and activities in Palestine, Cairo, and Jerusalem.

    The first album contains 48 photographs and is inscribed on the front cover 'Mesopotamia 1915-16', and 'Egypt 1917'. Underneath the inscriptions is a hand-coloured image of the Australian Flying Corps colour patch. The cover is brown buckrum with 'Kodak' imprinted in gold leaf. Inside the front cover there is an inscription, 'To my darling mother & father with love, From Hector, Dec. 1917’. All the photographs have handwritten captions underneath. It also includes a small prayer indulgence to the 'Blessed Martin De Porres, O.P.' One side has an image and the prayer is on the verso. The album contains a number of images of military aircraft, the landscape, trenches, and fellow soldiers. The planes and locations are clearly identified in captions added by Hector. Some aerial images are also included.

    The second album contains 48 photographs and is printed with 'Photographs' within a decorative design. The cover is green buckrum. Most of the photographs have captions annotated on their verso however in a different hand to that of the first album. Inside the back cover is printed 'WB&S 149B'. The album includes scenic views of significant sites in Jerusalem, including photographs of Omar Mosque and the Church of the Nativity.
