  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The New South Wales Amateur Sports Club was established in 1896. In 1900, when the club took premises at 10-12 Hunter Street, Sydney, the name was changed to the New South Wales Sports Club Limited. It became the headquarters for a range of sports in New South Wales and Australia and fostered Australian participation in international sport. As part of a long association with eminent aviators, the club entertained aviatrix Amy Johnson on 11 June 1930, following the completion of her solo flight from Croydon, London, to Darwin. She was presented with a sharkskin travelling case during her visit.

Noel Cook (1896-1981) was a cartoonist and comic strip writer. Born in New Zealand, he moved to Sydney where he drew cartoons for Smiths Weekly and the Bulletin and later produced comic strips for the Sunday Times and the Daily Telegraph. He left Australia for London in 1950.
