In 2015 work began on a Light Rail line from Circular Quay down George Street to Central Station, resulting in the closure of parts of George Street and the re-routing of many bus routes. In 2016 work began on another major infrastructure project, the Sydney metro, which will include three new CBD metro railway stations. The NSW Government acquired and will demolish almost 20 buildings in the CBD to make way for the new underground Metro rail track and stations.
