  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Henry Newton was born in Sydney in 1880. He was a merchant seaman on various voyages including the London to Sydney run from ca. 1895 to 1898 when he joined the NSW Department of Navigation, firstly as a seaman, and from 1908 to 1913 as an assistant lighthouse keeper at Seal Rocks, South Solitary Island and Norah Head. In 1913 he was appointed to the Public Library of NSW as caretaker and cleaner, living with his wife and four children in the flat on the Mitchell Library roof. He died in 1960.

    2 signed, typed letters from The Public Library of New South Wales dated 25 August 1919 and 31 July 1942, commending Mr Newton for work done.
