  John Andrews describes his early life and his career in North America. He talks about growing up in Lindfield, a northern suburb of Sydney, his father’s job as a monumental stonemason in Newtown, his decision to become an architect and being the first in his family to attend university. He describes his time in National Service, when he accidentally shot himself in the right knee, necessitating a year in hospital and causing complications in later life which led to the amputation of his lower left leg. During this time he met Rosemary, his future wife. He talks of his return to university and the lack of inspiration from his teachers. He built a couple of houses for people he knew, and worked in an architect’s office. He successfully applied to the Harvard School of Design and won funding. He comments on the all-embracing teaching style at Harvard and his admiration for the Dean, Josep Lluis Sert, who would help him in later projects. He describes the close bonds he formed while working on a design for the Toronto City Hall, later settling in Toronto and marrying Rosemary. Taking a year off to travel back to Sydney, they visited many important architectural sites in Europe, Russia and India. He discusses the commissions he worked on after his return to Canada, including Scarborough College, Guelph University, the Expo 67 pavilions, Miami Seaport Terminal and the project he says is “all his”, Gund Hall, the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
