Hilda May Reid was born in Prahan, Melbourne in January 1903 and had two sisters, Olive and Florence, and one brother, Henry. The family moved to Sydney and settled in Fairy Bower, near Manly. After the first World War, Hilda began a relationship with George Walter Jones, an heir to the Jones Bros. Coal company. George's father, Edward senior, along with his brother David, made the family fortune by winning a government contract to build railway lines to carry Hunter Valley coal which they also shipped from Catherine Hill Bay and Newcastle to the Jones Bros. wharf in Sydney.

While the couple's relationship had begun by the early 1920s, George's mother, Sarah Jones did not approve and so they did not marry until 1934 after Sarah's death in 1931, and moved into the family home Anglesey on Lang Road, Centennial Park. In the late 1920s, George and his brothers purchased 15,000 shares to gain control of the New Leichhardt Stadium on Parramatta Road in Sydney, known as the 'Mecca of Pugilism'. The venue successfully held boxing and wrestling bouts and also held charity events and vaudeville performances.

George died in 1939 of cardiac failure and without a will, leaving Hilda in a precarious situation and Edward Jones senior eventually removed his daughter-in-law from Anglesey.
