Bahati Salima was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire) around 1976. At the age of ten, she travelled unaccompanied to Rwanda, where she lived and worked until returning to the Congo as a refugee during the Rwandan civil war. After marrying a German citizen, she moved to Hamburg, but returned to Africa following his death in 1997. In the early stages of pregnancy, she flew to Australia on a tourist visa, eventually gaining permanent residency with her son.
