Maylei Hunt is a Photomedia professional based in Melbourne. Her work focuses on community, art and education. Hunt has been working as a commercial portrait and documentary photographer and teacher of creative photography. She has exhibited since 1993 in both Australia and the UK including solo exhibitions at STILLS Gallery and at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre.

These digital photographs document, over a number of years, various public rallies held in Sydney in support of changes to the Marriage Act to allow same-sex couples to marry legally.

The rallies were colourful demonstrations featuring, along with members of the public, many representatives from a number of LGBTQI and other organisations and groups (amongst these were PFLAG [Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays], Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir, Socialist Alliance, the Greens). These groups feature in the Hunt photographs.

The images depict the assortment of signs and slogans that were predominant at the rallies and displayed outside private homes as well as shops and businesses. The signs also represent the variety of issues that were interwoven in the marriage equality discussion including freedom of speech, religious rights and the contentious ‘safe schools’ program.
