  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sandra Bates was the artistic director of Ensemble Theatre, Kirribilli, New South Wales from 1985 until 2015. Originally trained as a pharmacist, Sandra turned her hand to acting in the 1970s and is a graduate of Hayes Gordon's acting classes at the Ensemble Theatre. An interest in directing theatre led to Sandra directing over 100 plays and eventually replacing Hayes Gordon as the Ensemble Theatre's Governing and Artistic Director.
    Sandra was awarded the Variety Club Heart Award for her contribution to theatre in 2002, and in 2007 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sydney Theatre Critics and the Helpmann Award for Best Regional Touring Production for Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks. In 2001 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia.
