Zohra Aly was born in 1970 in Mombasa, Kenya, later moving with her mother to Pakistan and then the United Arab Emirates. She obtained a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree at Kings College, London and worked in Wales and Dubai before moving to Shellharbour, NSW, in 1993. She worked as a hospital pharmacist until 2002 and has since worked as a freelance journalist and taught Islamic studies.
