Captain Goddard was born in Norfolk on January 26, 1835, and began his career at sea at the age of 13 years as an apprentice on board the brig Cumberland, of Blyth. He commanded the sailing ships La Hogue 1865-1874, the Parramatta, 1874-1887 and the Macquarie (renamed from the Melbourne in 1888), 1887-1896
