    Jean Bowman was born in Botany, New South Wales, the daughter of Thomas Walter Andrew Bowman and Eileen May Bowman. She worked at the Public library of New South Wales, Sydney, from 1937 until 1943.

  • Scope and Content
    A photocopy of Jean Bowman Blake’s eight page handwritten reminiscences of working at the Public Library of New South Wales, Sydney, 1937-1943, and written in May, 1994. Includes detailed descriptions of the buildings, interiors, reading rooms and collection arrangement, of the Bent Street Library and the old and new Mitchell reading rooms, the duties and day-to-day working life of Library employees and accounts of Mrs Blake’s contemporaries, notably William Ifould and Ida Leeson. Also includes reflections on World War Two and the Library’s contribution to the war effort, on social impacts and the surrounding atmosphere in Sydney.
