  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

David Don Turner (1931-2018), NSW Government Architect from 1962, was project architect for the William Balmain Teachers' College, a brutalist-style education building and campus in Lindfield NSW. The complex was built in a series of stages with construction beginning in 1968. In 1975 it became the Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education before merging with UTS in 1990 as the Kuring-gai Campus of the University of Technology Sydney.

The NSW Government Architect was responsible for the design, specifically David Turner and Peter Stronege of Allen Jack + Cottier and landscape design by Allen Correy with Bruce Mackenzie. The building was created in a number of stages. David Don Turner, as project architect for the NSW State Government, worked on the initial stages until 1989. The later stages were completed by David Don Turner as an independent contractor.

Construction on Stage 1 started in 1968 and included the library, lower lecture rooms, arts and crafts, TV studio, teaching and science blocks, astronomy/observation tower and greenhouse. Stage 2 commencing in 1972 consisted of the oval to the north of the site, basketball courts, gymnasium, medical teaching block, union and administration areas and 1000 seat assembly hall, with organ. Stage 3 commencing in 1974 added gym and sports facilities accessed via a walkway from the main building complex. Stage 4 commencing in 1977 included lecture rooms and offices, dining terraces, and Stage 5 in 1984 saw the addition of more lecture rooms and offices. Stage 6 commencing in 1985 added Child Care facilities.
