  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Herbert Badham (1899-1961) studied at the Sydney Art School under Julian Ashton, George Lambert and Henry Gibbons, and later taught at East Sydney Technical School. His preferred subjects were typical of Sydney’s 1930s and 1940s modernist artists, including beach scenes, everyday urban life and figure studies. In 1949 he published an important historical survey of Australian art, 'A study of Australian art'.

  • Collection history
From the estate of the artist, thence by descent.
  • Scope and Content
One oil painting on composition board depicting the rooftops, the built environment and domestic details of inner city Sydney in 1944. The tower of the Kings Cross Hotel is visible in the top right of the picture and lines of washing and chimney smoke are glimpsed throughout the composition. The elevated view looks east towards Woolloomooloo Bay and the vantagepoint would most likely have been in East Sydney Technical College (National Art School) in Darlinghurst, where Badham was a teacher at the time.
