  • Scope and Content
    The material includes letters Myles Dunphy wrote to his girlfriend and then wife, Margaret Peet, over the period 1922 to 1970. The letters from Myles to Margaret, document the early years of their relationship, from when they met in 1922, and include some from when they were separated by travel in later life.

    Also a copy of 'Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam', added to by Dunphy with handwritten poems, pasted in photographs and watercolour drawings, and an inscription to his ‘girl Dorothy’, signed by Dunphy in 1917. Hand illustrated booklets Dunphy made for his wife Margaret Peet, as well as the book of poetry dedicated to an earlier girlfriend, Dorothy.

    The correspondence and papers include wartime identity cards, Dunphy’s OBE citation invitation, his architect registration papers from 1923, exception from military service papers in 1916, letters of commendation, life insurance rejection paperwork and pedigree papers for his dog, Dexter, purchased in 1925.

    February 2, 1922, Myles to Margaret. Probably the first letter Myles wrote to Margaret, not mailed but sent via his sister Cora who was also a friend of Margaret’s.
    August 1922, Myles to Margaret. ‘A dream of wilderness’, written for Margaret.
    November 6, 1922, Myles to Margaret. Written at Garie Beach, south of Sydney, where Myles took a small group of walkers. Also deals with preparations for Hawkesbury trip.
    December 24, 1922, Myles to Margaret. Written at The Basin, Coaster’s Retreat, Pittwater. Myles on a canoe trip on the Hawkesbury River with Roy Davies.
    December 30, 1922, Myles to Margaret. Written at Cowan Creek, Hawkesbury River to Margaret at Leura where she was holidaying. Letter no. 2.

    Myles and Margaret married on 19 December 1925. Unless Margaret was away, the following letters are address to their second home at 74 Woronora Parade, Oatley.

    January 18, 1946, Myles to Margaret. Dexter to Mummy. Written at Currarong, South Coast of NSW. Margaret’s father died while Myles, Margaret, Milo and Dexter were on holiday. Margaret and Milo returned to Sydney for the funeral staying at 5 Plant Street, Balgowlah, her family’s home.

    Handmade booklet 'Reflections by Nekome: The Moonlight Camp, an extract from the journal of Nekome' and dedicated to Margaret Peet, February, 1922. Nekome is an American Indian name Myles adopted for himself in his early adult life.
