Gillian Mears (1964-2016), award winning novelist and short story writer, was born in Lismore and grew up in and around the northern New South Wales town of Grafton. In 1985 she completed a degree in communications at the NSW Institute of Technology, Sydney. She published two collections of short stories, Ride a Cock Horse (1988), winner of a Commonwealth Writer's prize and Fineflour (1990). Her first novel, The Mint Lawn, won the Australian/Vogel Literary Award in 1990 and was published the following year. She won a Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship in 1990 and a Literature Board studio residency in Paris a year later. She has contributed numerous stories to magazines and also to a number of anthologies including Sisters (1993) and Picador New Writers 2 (1994). Her second novel, The Grass Sister (1995) won a Commonwealth Writer's prize and A Map of the Gardens (2002) won the 2003 Steele Rudd Australian Short Story Award. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, she bought an old ambulance she called ‘Ant and Bee’ in which she lived, wrote and travelled for several years. From 2006 she was living at Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills, where she wrote her multi-award winning novel Foal's Bread (2011) and an illustrated fable about life and death for all ages, The Cat with the Coloured Tail (2015). Mears died on 16 May 2016 in her cabin on her father's property near Grafton.
