  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The partnership of Sydney-based commercial artists Alan and Enid Rigby (Greenacre) commenced in about 1927 and endured until Alan’s death in 1966. Alan P. Rigby & E.J. Greenacre initially set up office in the Manchester Unity Building, Elizabeth Street, Sydney. In 1931 the partnership moved to the 10th floor, Kyle House, Macquarie Place where they stayed in this office until the late 1930s, when they moved to a smaller office on the 11th floor of Kyle House where they stayed until 1966.
Alan and Enid met whilst working as commercial artists in the Richardson Studio (which was located in Roma House, 537 George Street Sydney). Alan had learnt his trade in the studio of A.H. Moginie, George Street, Sydney. In 1923 Alan moved to the Richardson Studio as a senior artist. Enid had commenced her training as an indentured apprentice to the Richardson Studio in around 1923, and this is where the pair met. The Richardson Studio produced a range of advertising artwork for newspapers, magazines and display. At the completion of Enid’s 4 year apprenticeship, Alan and Enid decided to set up a studio together. The 1920s and 30s were the busiest time for the partnership. They produced brochures, flyers and posters for large companies such as P&O and E&A shipping lines as well as department stores such as Winn’s. Alan P. Rigby was also a member of the NSW Mountain Trails Club and a good friend of Myles Dunphy.
