Dr John Vallance has lectured in Latin, Greek and ancient philosophy at the University of Cambridge as a Fellow and Tutor of Gonville and Caius College. He has published widely in the history of classical thought. Since his return home to Australia, he has also held visiting fellowships at the University of New England and the University of New South Wales, and is currently a Director of the National Art School.

In recent years he has been Headmaster of Sydney Grammar School (1999-2017), served on the Board of the State Library of New South Wales Foundation, as a Trustee of the State Library of New South Wales Foundation and member of the Library Council of New South Wales, and as an Advisory Board member of the Australian String Quartet.

Dr Vallance is an Honorary Professor at the University of New South Wales and is also a musician and works privately as a sculptor. He became the NSW State Librarian and Chief Executive in 2017.
