  • Scope and Content
Eighty-two glass lantern slides made from original photographic negatives and published illustrations. The lantern slides are from Tonga and Fiji and depict missionary and religious activity in the Pacific post World War One and before the outbreak of World War Two. The photographs also capture a very significant period in Tongan, London Methodist Missionary Society and the Wesleyan Church’s history.

Lantern slides include images of the Queen Salote Tupou III in her robes, ministers and missionaries involved in the religious and political life of Tonga and Fiji, examples of women wearing traditional tapa dresses rather than missionary ‘Mother Hubbard’ dresses as well as landscapes and houses from the period.
